Dental Sedation

Our office offers several methods to help make your dental experience as calm and comfortable as possible. Dental sedation is a wonderful option for those experiencing dental anxiety. Depending on the level of anxiety, different sedation options are available:

Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is commonly used to make treatment more comfortable. This method is especially safe and effective for both adults and young children. Key details include:

  • Inhaled through a mask – Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and induces a state of relaxation.
  • Adjustable levels – The amount of nitrous oxide can be adjusted throughout the procedure depending on the patient’s comfort level.
  • No need for a driver – It is not necessary to have someone drive the patient home after an appointment where nitrous oxide was used.

Although the patient feels relaxed with nitrous oxide, most patients will still require local anesthetic to fully eliminate discomfort during the dental procedure.

Mild Oral Sedation

For patients experiencing more significant anxiety, mild oral sedation can be an effective option. After reviewing the patient’s medical history, our dentists can prescribe specific sedative medications. Important points about mild oral sedation include:

  • Taken before the appointment – These medications are taken prior to the dental appointment.
  • Amnesic effects – Many of these medications have significant amnesic effects, resulting in limited memory of the dental procedure the following day.
  • Requires a driver – In this case, the patient will need someone to drive them to and from the dental appointment.
